Description
Lady Midday, also known as Poludnitsa, Południca, Polednice, Chirtel Ma, the "noonday demon", or "noonday witch," is a figure from Slavic and Eastern European folklore who is said to appear at noon and bring about feelings of lethargy, depression, and despair. She is often depicted as a figure of dread and evil.
In some stories, she is depicted as carrying a sickle, which is a tool used for cutting grass or reaping crops. The sickle is often used as a symbol of death and the passage of time in literature and art. It is also associated with the idea of reaping what one has sown, or facing the consequences of one's actions. In the context of Lady Midday, the sickle may symbolize the cutting down of one's energy and productivity during the middle of the day.
It is said that people should avoid to be outside during the noon time, to prevent being caught by her, as it can make them feeling tired and lazy. Lady Midday serves as a reminder to be aware of the impact of time and to take care of ourselves during the day.
From the artist: I created this in January of 2023. I was browsing web reading about Eastern European folklore, when I came across the legend of Lady Midday. What I found fascinating about it was that she haunts the brightest part of the day. So, I thought it might be a bit of a challenge to create a horror themed artwork that was in the bright daylight rather than having a dark or foggy scene.
Thanks for looking!
