Therizinosaurus is one of the most unusual dinosaurs known to science due to its peculiar adaptations and appearance. The name "Therizinosaurus" translates to "scythe lizard," derived from the Greek words "therizo" (to reap or to cut) and "sauros" (lizard). This name references the dinosaur's most iconic feature: its incredibly long claws. These claws could reach lengths of up to 3.3 feet (1 meter) or possibly even longer, making them the longest claws of any known animal. It is now known to belong to the theropod group of dinosaurs, which mainly consists of carnivorous dinosaurs like T. rex and Velociraptor. Unlike its predatory relatives, Therizinosaurus was likely herbivorous or possibly omnivorous. The fossils of Therizinosaurus were discovered in Mongolia and initially caused a lot of confusion among paleontologists due to their unique morphology. Only parts of the creature, mainly its gigantic claws and some limb elements, were discovered initially, leading to a lot of speculation about the animal's lifestyle and appearance. With its large belly, tall stature, and long neck, Therizinosaurus might have looked somewhat like a gigantic, feathered sloth. It's believed by many paleontologists that it had feathers, a feature found in many theropods, especially those closely related to birds. Therizinosaurus lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 million years ago.
