Description
A trio a strange creatures forages in a primeval wood on an autumn day. They are small brown timid animals that graze on the grasses growing on the forest floor. Nearby is a calm pond that reflects the brightly colored foliage.
These are Eohippus, or "dawn horse", the earliest known ancestor of the modern horse. They lived in a time period that began just after the extinction event that ended the reign of the dinosaurs, known as the Eocene. For a time, eohippus was synonymous with hyracotherium. They are also very similar in shape to eurohippus which lived in what is now Europe whereas eohippus lived in what is now North America
I've done an image of these creatures before, but it was a while ago and I felt it was time for a new one. As an artist who does a lot of both horse themed art as well as paleoart, they are a fun subject that bridges the gap between the two series.
