Quetzalcoatlus was one of the largest known flying animals of all time. This pterosaur, a type of flying reptile, lived during the Late Cretaceous period around 68-66 million years ago in what is now North America.
Named after the Aztec feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl, Quetzalcoatlus is known for its immense size. It had a wingspan that is estimated to have been around 33-36 feet (10-11 meters), although some estimates suggest it could have been even larger. The exact height of Quetzalcoatlus while on the ground is not known for sure, but some estimates suggest that it could have stood as tall as a giraffe, around 16-18 feet (about 5 meters).
Quetzalcoatlus belonged to the pterosaur family Azhdarchidae, a group of advanced toothless pterosaurs with unusually long, stiffened necks. Despite its size and its status as a flying creature, it is believed that Quetzalcoatlus was a competent terrestrial forager. It likely used its beak to probe the ground for small animals and carrion in a similar way to modern storks.
