Description
This is an illustration I did for the Novella "The Sword from Beyond the Stars" by J.D. Harber.
The creature is called a Shorrak. It's a flying mount used by the various intelligent races of world of Gwade (the setting for the book), but apparently is rather expensive and rare so is employed sparingly. The protagonists in the story are involved in a chase sequence on one. The book really has no detailed description of them so I was free to make it look how I envisioned it which made it a really fun illustration to do.
If you are interested in the story, here is the description from the back cover:
A strange world, a mysterious threat...
Attacks by forces unknown on its borders threaten the Kingdom of Ethosia, the home of the Onama. The advisors of King Jarrin Darkeye believe it is the work their old rivals to the south, but one of the kingdom’s assassins has reason to believe otherwise. Kenress the Archer will have to convince the king to help her, and she has a wild plan to do it.
When blood is deadly and metal is virtually unknown, an ultimate weapon of legend exists: the Sword. Jarrin and Kenress plan to use this weapon to save the kingdom, but the Sword is not going to turn out to be what they expected.
Visit the world of Gwade for an adventure across a land filled with exotic locations, bizarre creatures, and diverse inhabitants.
