Description
This is a scene from original version of the Snow White fairy tale, as collected by the Brothers Grimm. After being poisoned by the apple, the dwarves place Snow White in a glass coffin in the forest. After some time passes, a prince traveling through the land happens across the coffin and falls in love with Snow White on first site. When the prince tries to move here, the apple is dislodged from her throat and she wakes up. Later during their wedding, her evil step-mother is forced to dance herself to death in red hot iron shoes.
My image depicts the moment when the prince first discovers the glass coffin. I had experimented with some more elaborate shapes for the coffin, but the nature of the refraction of the glass caused the image of Snow White to distort too much for my liking, so I settled on a simple box shape.
The figures were posed in Poser 6 then imported into Vue 8 where the rest of the scene was constructed. Vue 8 was used to do the rendering. It took a few seconds over 30 hours to render on an AMD Phenom X4 quad core 3.2 GHz with 9GB of memory. I probably spent another 4 hours rendering various patches to make corrections or or to use in post production snowcloning. I did a great deal of post production work in Gimp to give it a more painterly look and adjust the colors.
