Artist's Description

The dodo was a flightless bird related to pigeons and doves, but was a great deal bigger, standing about a meter tall. It lived exclusively on the island of Mauritius in the Indian ocean and went extinct in the 17th century. Its extinction is a source of conjecture, but was likely due to the introduction of non-native species such as pigs and macaques to the island brought by human sailors.



The is the first artwork in my new extinct animal art series that will be featuring dodo birds (Raphus cucullatus). Their relatively recent extinction makes them a bit forgotten when it comes to paleoart. However, they are somewhat unique in that, unlike most extinct fauna, drawings and paintings do exist that were made from life while they were still around. Personally, I find them to be very interesting when it comes to artistic composition as their profile has a rather nice play of curved lines.



I made the dodo models using Blender 3D then exported them to Vu...

A native of the East Cobb community in the Atlanta Metro area, he majored in art at the University of Georgia and has since accumulated over 25 years of art experience. Most well-known for his scientific illustrations of prehistoric creatures, he is also accomplished in creating Wild West art, fantasy art, wildlife scenes, and horror illustrations.
