Description
The dodo was a flightless bird related to pigeons and doves, but was a great deal bigger, standing about a meter tall. It lived exclusively on the island of Mauritius in the Indian ocean and went extinct in the 17th century. Its extinction is a source of conjecture, but was likely due to the introduction of non-native species such as pigs and macaques to the island brought by human sailors.
The is the first artwork in my new extinct animal art series that will be featuring dodo birds (Raphus cucullatus). Their relatively recent extinction makes them a bit forgotten when it comes to paleoart. However, they are somewhat unique in that, unlike most extinct fauna, drawings and paintings do exist that were made from life while they were still around. Personally, I find them to be very interesting when it comes to artistic composition as their profile has a rather nice play of curved lines.
I made the dodo models using Blender 3D then exported them to Vue 9 where I constructed the rest of the scene. Final rendering was done using Vue 9 and took about 4 days on an Intel i3 2.93 GHz with 8 GB of RAM. Post production was done using GIMP.

Great composition and a very interesting creation of a subject not seen in our time unfortunately. Great models and lighting of course! v

Daniel, Your expertise with photography and high-tech knowledge is impressive, to say the least. I don't know much about that at all. I simply know that I love what you do and admire & respect you. This is such a clear and well done work. I also learned quite a bit from your description. Thanks for you encouraging words. F/V
