The rougarou is thought to be derived from the loup-garou, which is simply the French term for a werewolf. The belief in these beasts was likely brought over to the New World with French settlers and is particularly associated with Catholicism: The monster is said to prey on those who fail to follow the rules of Lent, and even are created when someone breaks those same rules seven years in a row.
I had not ever actually heard of this particular cryptid until a few weeks before I made this. A fan brought it to my attention.
