A Pony Express rider rides atop a pinto colored mustang as it gallops across the plains at the sun sets in a sky laced with clouds. They move so fast that wind whips through the horse's mane and tail and lifts the mail satchel from the young man's back. It is as if they are racing with the sunset, trying to reach their destination before the night descends on them.

I'd been meaning to create a Pony Express themed artwork for quite some time when I made this. I finally had a reason to when I needed something to illustrate an article I was working on for my blog that talked about email. I wanted an image that somehow represented sending mail, yet still stuck to my themes and style. So I decided the time was right to create this image.

I made this using digital CGI and painting techniques. The horse and rider were posed in poser then exported to Vue for rendering. The sunset background was made in Vue as well. I used GIMP to do a lot of the touch up work.
