Artist's Description
Ambelodon, the shovel tusker, is an extinct species proboscidean, a cousin of modern elephants. Notable for its long lower jaw, it roamed the Earth 6 to 9 million years ago during the Miocene period.
In this scene, a grey ambelodon wades in the shallow waters of a murky swamp. It’s thought that shovel tuskers might have used their lower jaw to scoop through marshy waters for food. The more recent belief, though, has been that the lower jaw was for scaping the bark off trees. I still decided to place mine in a swamp more just because it makes a neat looking scene.
