During your hike through the woods, you come across a strange surreal scene: a woman with almost white hair and wearing a white dress sits on a rock by a small dark pond. Next to her sits a large white tiger. Both seem relaxed and don't seem to notice you. It's almost like some sort of mirage.
From the artist: a recurring theme in my art is white furred animals. It's not necessarily symbolic of anything, rather, I find that such subjects present a certain kind of technical challenge as white has a way of picking up the colors of the environment a bit. For this particular work, I had just finished a work featuring an orange tiger () and I wanted to give a white tiger a try. However, I also wanted to really ramp up the challenge on this one and add a human figure as well. So, I added the woman whose dress and hair also echoed the white color theme.
I call it "White Tiger Goddess" because I thought the woman resembled the depictions of Greek and Roman goddesses one might find in classical art. However, while I could find some Asian mythologies that incorporated white tigers, I really could not find any that featured a goddess specifically related to white tigers. Still, I really like the way this scene worked out with its play of light on dark.
I created this image with a combination of Sennelier oil pastels and Faber Castell Polychromos colored pencils. The original is 28"x22" on archival quality 600 grit black sanded paper and is sealed with Sennelier fixative for oil pastels.
