Artist's Description
A quiet morning in the Cascade Range is shattered when a volcano erupts. Spewing ash into the sky, the mountain blows its top. Pyroclastic flows run down the slopes, rivers of burning death. Volcanic lightning created by the static electricity of ash and rock particles colliding streak in every direction.
Volcanoes are one of Earth's most dramatic natural disasters. Eruptions are violent explosions, releasing massive amounts of energy and heat. Quite a number of mountains in the Pacific Northwest are, in fact, volcanoes. The most famous of these, of course, is Mount St. Helens.
I created this image to practice a technique for making mountains. The mountains were nice, but lacked excitement, so I sculpted the ash cloud and pyroclastic flows and added them to the seen to ratchet up the drama of this artwork.
