Artist's Description
A herd of strange looking creatures forage on the beaches of a tropical coast. They look like elephants, but the have two additional tusks on their lower jaw. One of them approaches you with its trunk raised to find out what you are all about.Â
Meet the Stegotetrabelodon. Stegotetrabelodon is an extinct, four tusked, prehistoric cousin of the elephant, a type of gomphothere of the Micoene. They lived in Africa and the Middle East, and moved in herds. Otherwise, information on them appears to be a bit scarce.
This is one of the stranger paleo critters I've depicted. It's pretty much got the craziest name of any creature I've ever made art of. An interesting bit of trivia is that they were the inspiration for the Oliphaunts in the "Lord of the Rings" movies.
