I always enjoyed images of the hills of Tolkien's Rohan. This wasn't really intended as Middle Earth fan art, but it reminded me of it nonetheless.
This was another image that just kept changing the more I worked with it. Originally it was figurative work with a knight standing on a fantasy hillside with a tower in the background (resuing the setting for an earlier work of mine called Knight Fight [link]). I decided though that I was tired of knights for a while, so I switched it out with a female character. At first she was nude, but her skin just seemed to smooth, it clashed with the roughness of the rest of the scene. So I put her in a dress. That still didn’t seem to be enough, so I added the horse. I found that the horse worked so well, that it outclassed the woman, so I removed her. The result is this horse portrait.
The horse was posed in Poser Pro 2010 then imported into Vue 8 where the rest of the scene was constructed. Rendering took ~24 hours using an AMD Phenom X4 quad core 3.2 GHz with 9GB of memory. Post production (adjusting the colors and adding my signature) was done in Gimp.
