A medieval warrior faces you in a misty forest. The knight wears shining plate armor and carries a poleaxe and a shield with a red cross. A red plume decorates his helmet. A castle rests on a hilltop in the distance.
Redcrosse, or the Redcrosse Knight, is a key character in Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene, representing holiness and a Christian’s spiritual journey. As the knight of Saint George, he is sent by Gloriana, the Faerie Queen, to defeat a dragon threatening Una, who symbolizes truth and the Church. His red-cross shield reflects his faith and battle against sin, facing deception from figures like Duessa. His victory over the dragon represents good triumphing over evil. Through Redcrosse, Spenser explores themes of virtue, faith, and redemption, making him a major figure in English literary tradition.
From the artist: I've been (slowly) reading the Faerie Queene and thought I'd do a few character studies of Redcrosse. This one is the knight alone. I previously had done one on horseback ( https://daniel-eskridge.pixels.com/featured/redcrosse-daniel-eskridge.html )
