Artist's Description

These were once real creatures. They lived during the late Pleistocene in South America and went extinct roughly 20,000 years ago. They don't really have any close cousins among modern animals. At least, that is what I could find in my admittedly cursory research on the web.

This was really my first attempt at creating a macrauchenia image. I'd done other animals for paleo art, but I found this one to be one of the most interesting with its almost alien appearance. In fact, this has often been mistaken for fantasy art or scifi art by some viewers.

I was particularly pleased with how this work turned out. Though I rendered it with computer software, I really like the way it looks like a traditional painting with a great cloudscape and moody atmosphere. In fact, I like it so much that I used it as my windows desktop wallpaper.

This work was awarded a Daily Deviation on Deviant art.
