Artist's Description
In the low light of an arctic twilight, a huge mountain of white fur and sharp teeth crests a rocky hill top. It's the biggest polar bear you've ever seen and he's coming for you.
Ursus maritimus tyrannus was a prehistoric cousin of the modern polar bear. It was larger and is hypothesized to have the bone structure of a grizzly bear then at arctic adaptations of a polar bear. Though not much is known about it as the only known fossil is a single bone found in the U.K.
I recently read the book The Terror by Dan Simmons which features a monster called the tuunbaq, which is similar to a polar bear. It got me wondering if there were any prehistoric creatures that might be similar. In my research, I came across the King Polar Bear and decided to give it a go for my next addition to my paleoart series.
