Description
Typically, when multiple species appear in paleoart, all of the animals depicted are extinct. It's easy to forget that some of the species that exist today have been around long enough to have crossed paths with some of those vanished ones. So, in this scene, a grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) wandering through the Pleistocene Pacific Northwest has just been ambushed by saber-toothed cat (smilodon fatalis). It would seem a little bit stupid on the part of the cat. After all the bear has a 300 pound advantage. However, seeing as how Ive seen housecats take on black bears, I think that this is easily a likely ice age scenario where the smilodon is just trying to run the bear off.
This image was created using Poser 6 and Vue 9. Both of the characters are by AM and were purchased at Renderosity.com. Post production was done using Gimp.
Normally, I dont use any kind of art filters, but the realistic image, just seemed to lack excitement. I actually created this image several months ago, but never published it as I thought it just didnt work. I found it last night while cleaning up my hard drive and decide to play around with it a bit in GIMP. When I cartoonified it, it came out with a sort of woodcut feeling that I actually rather liked.
