Description
A silverback gorilla stands on a rocky, vegetation covered ledge overlooking a jungle basin. The great ape watches as the sunset breaks through the clouds seemingly lighting the sky on fire. Meanwhile, the evening mists are already rising among the tropical forest in the valley below.
Gorillas are, in fact, one of my favorite animals. Whenever I'm at the Atlanta zoo (I take my family there at least once a month) I never miss the ape enclosure. However, up till now, I have not made a tremendous amount of art featuring primates. For some reason, images with apes just don't pop into my head the way other animals do. This work however was a bit of an exception to that. Actually, it was inspired by a recent viewing of King Kong. I was showing it to my children who had not seen it before, and I was struck by some of the visuals. So, I decided to make a Gorilla themed work. I like the way it turned out so well that I made it my new desktop wallpaper.
To make this artwork, I started by constructing the scene in a piece of software called Vue from E-on Software which I used to create the ledge, jungle valley and sky. Next, I used another computer program called Daz Studio to pose the gorilla figure and a plugin to that application called LookAtMyHair to give it fur -- both Daz Studio and LookAtMy hair are available from Daz3D ( http://introvertartist.com/daz ). I imported the ape into my Vue scene and had the computer render the image. Finally, I edited the image in GIMP (an open source alternative to Photoshop) to touch up mistakes, enhance colors, etc.
Thanks for looking!
