Description

A monstrous apparition emerges from the sea and wades through a weedy tidal marsh onto the shore. The creature looks like some hellish hybrid of fish, man, and frog. Pale eyes gaze eerily from either side of its head and rest above a wide mouth full of massive needle shaped teeth. Its sickly green skin reflects the light of the full moon as it sinks below the horizon.

A few weeks back, I was running a high fever and had a nasty cough. The cough was persistent enough to prevent me from sleeping even after taking a big dose of Nyquil. So, I decided to stumble into my office and work on ZBrush for a while. The creature in this image is the result of that particular sleepless, feverish, stoned-on-medication night.

The Deep Ones are characters from H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. They come from beneath the sea and venture on to land to mate with humans. The offspring of such unions look human at birth, but take on more fishlike qualities as they age, eventually becoming deep ones themselves. They live in several undersea locations throughout the world, but have a particularly large city under the waters at Devil's Reef (pictured here on the horizon) located off the coast of New England.
