In this Wild West still life, a poker hand rests on an old wooden table. It consists of five cards: the ace of spades, the ace of clubs, the eight of spades, and the eight of clubs: the legendary dead man's hand. The fifth card is the queen of hearts upon which there is a small splatter of blood. Also on the table are a gunslinger's hat, a six shooter, a few bullets, an empty shot glass, and, finally, as if ready to pay the ferry man, a pair of gold coins.
The dead man's hand is famous for being the cards Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot from behind by Jack McCall in a Deadwood saloon. Technically, the dead man's hand is any two pairs of aces and eights, but it was said of Hickok that they were the two black suites of each plus the queen of hearts.

Daniel is a classically trained artist. A native of the East Cobb community in the Atlanta Metro area, he majored in art at the University of Georgia and has since accumulated over 25 years of art experience. Most well-known for his scientific illustrations of prehistoric creatures, he is also accomplished in creating Wild West art, fantasy art, wildlife scenes, and horror illustrations.
