Description
In this Wild West still life, a poker hand rests on an old wooden table. It consists of five cards: the ace of spades, the ace of clubs, the eight of spades, and the eight of clubs: the legendary dead man's hand. The fifth card is the queen of hearts upon which there is a small splatter of blood. Also on the table are a gunslinger's hat, a six shooter, a few bullets, an empty shot glass, and, finally, as if ready to pay the ferry man, a pair of gold coins.
The dead man's hand is famous for being the cards Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot from behind by Jack McCall in a Deadwood saloon. Technically, the dead man's hand is any two pairs of aces and eights, but it was said of Hickok that they were the two black suites of each plus the queen of hearts.
Originally, I was making this as a still life for a royal flush (which you can see here: https://daniel-eskridge.pixels.com/featured/royal-flush-daniel-eskridge.html ) but I quickly saw that this really needed to be a dead man's hand. So I made this version as well. One of the things I remember from history class was that the cards in the 19th century often didn't have numbers on them, just a count of the symbols, so, for the eights, I left the numbers off.
I created this image using a digital art technique known as 3D rendering which has the computer simulating the effects of light on virtual 3D models. It's a similar process to how movie makers do CGI special effects.
Thanks for looking,
Daniel
