Coahuilaceratops magnacuerna is a species of herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 72 million years ago. It was discovered in the Cerro del Pueblo Formation in Coahuila, Mexico, which is how it got its name. The genus name "Coahuilaceratops" combines the location of its discovery, Coahuila, with "ceratops," which means "horned face" in Greek. The species name "magnacuerna" translates to "large horn" in Latin.
Coahuilaceratops is known for its large horns, with one horn on its nose and two above its eyes. The brow horns are especially large and are among the largest of any known ceratopsid. The dinosaur was a relatively large ceratopsid, with estimates suggesting it reached lengths of around 6.7 meters (22 feet) and weighed around 5 tons.
Coahuilaceratops, like other ceratopsids, was a quadrupedal herbivore with a beak and a frill at the back of its head. The frill likely had various functions, such as species recognition, protection against predators, and thermoregulation. The large horns would have been used for defense against predators, as well as for display or combat with rivals for mating rights.
Despite its impressive features, Coahuilaceratops is not as well-known as some other ceratopsid dinosaurs like Triceratops, but it still represents an important discovery that has contributed to our understanding of dinosaur diversity and evolution.
