Description
A shepherd flirts with a shepherdess on the grassy banks of a wide lazy river. With a grin on his face, he uses his shepherd's crook to peek under the girl's grey dress. She looks back at him, an amused expression on her face which is covered by the shadow of her wide brimmed hat. It's fall and the trees are covered in bright red and yellow leaves. Three sheep graze upon the yellow grass nearby. Overhead, a few grey clouds float in the sky.
The pastoral is one of the oldest genres of art. Such scenes were found on the walls of ancient Greek and Roman interiors. Later, the subject was also popular during the Renaissance. Pastorals generally depict scenes of young people herding livestock in an idealized rustic setting. They are usually shown as happy and content and, when both genders appear, there is often romantic undertones.
I've been writing an article on genre in art from my blog (introvertartist.com) and I decided to come up with a work to serve as an example. Since I was making this during the fall, I decided to give it an autumn setting, which is a bit unusual for a pastoral as they usually emphasize summertime greens and brighter skies.
I created this image using a combination of CGI technology and digital painting.
Thanks for looking,
Daniel
